Utilizing Hydroquinone for the Treatment of Dark Spots

There are multiple factors that can contribute to the appearance of dark spots on your skin, one of the main culprits being the sunshine. Though dark spots can worsen year-round, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause hyperpigmented areas to become darker much faster.

What is hyperpigmentation?: hyperpigmentation is an increase in melanin in certain areas of the skin. One example of this is the presence of dark spots (ie. sunspots), which are caused by prolonged UV exposure and free radical damage. Another manifestation of hyperpigmentation on the skin is melasma. While melasma usually occurs in patches on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun for long periods of time, it can also be triggered by hormonal changes, making it a little more difficult to treat.

The utilization of topical creams and serums is the most common way to combat hyperpigmentation. There are a few different ingredients that can be used to lessen the appearance of dark spots. One of the more popular ingredients is hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is an FDA-approved skin lightening agent that acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor and blocks the production of melanin (the skin’s pigment-producing cells). Although using topicals to fade discoloration won’t lead to results overnight, with consistent application effects can start to take place after a few weeks. It is also recommended that sunscreen become a part of your daily skincare routine, as it can aid in the prevention of additional dark spots, as well as increase the effectiveness of the hydroquinone.

Here at Laser Touch Medical Clinic, we offer our signature Bye Bye Age Spots Brightening Pads. These hydroquinone pre-soaked pads deliver an advanced approach to hyperpigmentation correction. It visibly fades freckles, liver spots, and other discolorations of the skin by prohibiting the formation of new melanin. The pads utilize our proprietary Trans-Epidermal Carrier system to effectively penetrate and deliver aggressive results. As a result, the pads lighten and brighten the overall complexion to correct uneven skin tone. They also function as a highly effective pre and post-treatment for in-office procedures. Our brightening pads are available for purchase, with prescription, in 2%, 4%, and 8% concentrations, depending on the severity of hyperpigmentation.
