What is Botox®?

Botox is purified Botulinum toxin type A, a protein that comes from bacteria. When Dr. Hakimian injects Botox into your muscle, it obstructs the path of the muscle’s nerve signals. Dr. Hakimian uses Botox to:

  • Soften, reduce, or eliminate wrinkles caused by muscle movements (dynamic wrinkles)
  • Treat eyelid twitching and spasms
  • Treat and prevent chronic migraines
  • Treat jaw disorders associated with jaw pain and tension, such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)
  • Eliminate excessive sweating caused by hyperhidrosis

Wrinkles

Botox usually reduces wrinkles for 3-4 months at a time. Examples of dynamic wrinkles that Botox can treat include:

  • Smile lines and frown lines around the mouth
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Lines between the eyes
  • Horizontal lines on the forehead

Dr. Hakimian also offers Dysport®, another botulinum toxin product, for natural-looking wrinkle treatment.

Eye twitching

Botox helps stop eye twitching and spasming by relaxing the muscles above or below your eye. The treatment takes anywhere from a day to two weeks to take effect, and relief lasts about three months.

Chronic migraines

Chronic migraine headaches occur more than 15 days a month, with each headache lasting at least four hours every time. To treat current and prevent future migraines, Dr. Hakimian injects Botox around the pain fibers associated with your headaches. There, the Botox blocks the release of pain transmission chemicals. For the best results, it’s recommended to get Botox injections once every 12 weeks.

TMJ

Botox relieves jaw pain and tension headaches caused by teeth grinding, displaced jaw joints, and overworked jaw joints by relaxing the muscles that move the jaw. Usually, to treat TMJ symptoms, Dr. Hakimian injects Botox into certain jaw muscles. TMJ botox treatments usually start working almost immediately.

Hyperhidrosis

If you suffer from overactive sweat glands under your arms, in your groin, on your hands, or the bottoms of your feet, Botox may be able to help. Botox for hyperhidrosis works by blocking the secretion of a chemical activates sweat glands. You notice results after 2-4 days, and see full results within two weeks. Dryness lasts anywhere from 4-12 months.
