If you have a droopy eyelid, but do not want to undergo an expensive and invasive surgical procedure, known as a blepharoplasty, Dr. Hakimian may be able to treat your condition non-surgically.
Droopy eyelids, or ptosis, occur when the muscle that controls the raising and lowering of the eyelid can no longer perform its designated task, due to injury or loss of strength. Ptosis can occur from old age, diabetes, a brain tumor, stroke, accident, nerve damage, or genetics. In severe cases, the eyelid droops so far over the eye that it can obstruct vision.
Instead of undergoing a painful, dangerous, invasive, and expensive surgical procedure, Dr. Hakimian can correct the effects of ptosis non-surgically, using the same types of products that can firm the sagging skin of the face and neck. Dermal fillers and collagen injections can often help firm the skin around the eye, pulling the eyelid back up to a natural position, reducing the appearance of a droopy eyelid. These dermal fillers include products such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®. These products work by adding volume and firming the areas around the eyes, correcting the drooping appearance.
In cases where overactive or twitching muscles cause ptosis, Botox® injections may also prove beneficial. In this case, an uncontrollable muscle causes the eyelid to pull down or away from the eye. Botox® injections relax the muscle, allowing the eye to relax as well and return to its normal position. Botox® injections can often be used in conjunction with dermal fillers in order to first relax the muscles around the eye and then tighten the surrounding tissue.
If you have a droopy eyelid, Dr. Hakimian can assess your condition and help you decide which type of treatment is best for you.
