Acne

The common skin condition known as Acne can disrupt ones life, no matter how little the amount of breakouts. Mild acne can be cleared with the use of topical prescription creams, while moderate to severe acne requires more intense measures.

Moderate to severe acne, for which Accutane would have usually been prescribed, has been shown to respond to PDT.

Light treatments are safe and effective, and have been used in countless treatments around the world. The energy delivered by these systems are delivered in precise controlled bursts, and only affect the target tissues while leaving surrounding tissues intact.

What is PDT (Photodynamic Therapy)?

PDT is a type of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment, specialized to treat acne skin condition. In Photodynamic Therapy, IPL is being used in conjunction with a solution called Levulan.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a light-based treatment that has been shown to significantly improve acneic skin in conjunction with a proper skin care regimen. The light energy is gently absorbed by the skin causing the increased stimulation of collagen synthesis, softening the appearance of existing acne scars, fading of discoloration and redness, decrease in pore size and reduction and elimination of acne.

How does PDT acne treatment work?

A solution called Levulan is first wiped onto the affected area and allowed to penetrate for 60 minutes. After 60 minutes, the Levulan is washed off and the face is then treated with an IPL treatment.

The IPL system utilizes the delivery of precise amounts of light energy to the skin surface using a specialized hand-held device with a smooth flat glass surface that is held against your skin.

What is a PDT acne treatment like?

As with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments, some patients report a slight tingling sensation during treatment, which is pretty much likened to a rubber band snapping on your skin during controlled delivery of the light energy. Discomfort is minimal, but you can opt to have a topical anesthesia applied to your skin prior to treatment.

How soon will I see the results of Photodynamic Therapy?

Results can be seen even after the first treatment, and you will immediately notice that your skin will have a more even tone and smoother look and feel. In less than 2 weeks after your initial treatment, you will begin to notice that your skin tone will even out, pores will shrink significantly, redness will decrease and your acne will begin to fade and disappear. Your skin will be fresher and brighter with a lustrous youthful complexion.

How many Photodynamic treatments are needed?

Two to three treatments 2-3 weeks apart are usually sufficient. Other treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and/or acne facials can be added for optimal results.

After Photodynamic Therapy treatment

After the treatment, your skin may appear a little flushed, which will gradually fade to reveal acne-free skin. Post treatment pain is almost non-existent. Since PDT is a specialized Intense Pulsed Light treatment, after PDT treatments, it is recommended to use a sunscreen and care must be taken to avoid any UV light exposure for the first 24 hours post-procedure (just like after IPL treatments).
