Collagen is what makes your skin young and elastic—we have it in abundance when we are young, but our bodies produce less and less collagen as we age. You’ve probably heard of it before; collagen is constantly advertised as being an ingredient in firming lotions and creams. However, when Artefill® is injected into your skin, it adds more natural collagen at the injection site, helping your body to naturally fight the signs of aging.
There are several aspects of Artefill® that make it both unique and popular. First, Artefill® does not only contain collagen. Artefill® also contains special, patented microspheres that create support for your skin, helping it to hold the shape the collagen has formed, even after the collagen breaks down. The microspheres in Artefill® are comprised of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), which is one of the most widely used synthetic implant materials used in modern medicine. These microspheres remain intact and provide structural support in your skin to help it maintain its youthful shape, which will prevent wrinkles from returning.
Artefill® also contains lidocaine, an anesthetic that ensures your injection procedure will be painless and involve minimal discomfort. Since Artefill® involves several different materials, a skin test must be given before you receive any Artefill® injections. Dr. Hakimian needs to make sure you are not allergic to collagen or lidocaine, so if you have any known allergies to these products or other anesthetics, speak up and let him or her know.
If you pass the skin test and are deemed a good candidate to receive Artefill®, you will receive several treatments, four to six weeks apart, to ensure that all your aesthetic desires are met. Most patients only need two treatments to see perfect results. Over the course of the next several months, the Artefill® treatment will continue to improve, as the microspheres form a better support system, smoothing out even the deepest wrinkles and facial folds. In several clinical studies, full wrinkle correction lasted up to one year.
Side effects from Artefill® injections include mild swelling and reddening at the injection site, which typically dissipate within 24 hours. Taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs may increase the severity of these side effects. Patients with skin outbreaks or irritation should postpone treatment until the skin is entirely healed.
